This weeks Musical Memoirs is new. At least to me it is. Prior to getting iTunes, I had never heard of this band, or it's music. The vocalist and her songs are truly amazing. I look forward to sharing this particular song with my readers.
Put up your fight
They're wrong, you're right
Just stand so tall
So they can't make you fall
You're strong, they're weak
Your will to be free
Is everything you need
It's all you need
You're just trying to be yourself
And it's harder than you expected
You're just trying to be yourself
Trying to stay unaffected
Your light is bright
A soldier's strongest might
A playing symphony
A sound and sight to see
So take it all in stride
When all the minds collide
You're here to spread your wings
And all it brings
You're just trying to be yourself
And it's harder than you expected
You're just trying to be yourself
Trying to stay unaffected
You're just trying to be yourself
And it's harder than you expected
You're just trying to be yourself
Trying to stay unaffected
And it's harder than you expected
You're just trying to be yourself
Trying to stay unaffected
Some may consider this song to be all about "teen angst", but I choose to see it as simply being about growth itself. The title is somewhat misleading, I know. But to me, it takes someone of truth strength of mind to get through certain things in life, particularly, stages of growth. This is not to say that we all have the same strength of mind, nor that there are some who achieve perfection. It is simply that we work hard to become the people we are - the person whom our destinies guide us to. We are all soldiers of our own agendas.
Throughout the years, I have struggled, just as many others have. Growing up in and of itself is a statement. A statement of who one is, as well as the fact that they can now handle themselves appropriately. It is a declaration of one's independence as they grapple with their dependence on things unseen. I believe this song accurately describes that.
You're just trying to be yourself
And it's harder than you expected
To me, this is one of the most effective statements of the entire song, and I am glad it is repeated. We all need to be who we were made to be, and no one else. However, in finding whoever that is, we are often cut down. Not only are we cut down, but we are scrutinized, skepticized, and made fools of. Sadly, this is the life of so many teens and young adults today. All they know how to do about it, though is act a little "wimpy" (with all due respect to us all). I look at this as being something caused/created by older adults. They, and we, have failed to teach true honor. Furthermore there has been a failure to build character, among other things. If we do not build the characters of the children around us, then what are we to expect from them when they are older?
Put up your fight
They're wrong you're right
Just stand so tall
So they can't make you fall
These are also very important words. I remember my parents praising me for little things like wearing an obviously Christian t-shirt to a restaurant. At the time, I didn't think much of it. To me, it was "just a t-shirt". I've never truly been persecuted for that sort of thing. But I look at that now, and I think, it wasn't just the shirt. It is in everything I do. I am supposed to stand up for what I believe to be right, and stand against whatever I believe to be wrong. On a personal level, I may feel that there are some gray areas, but in this world, that is almost considered irrelevant. People want you to choose a side. You must decide whether to choose a side, or stand strong in the gray area.
Your will to be free
Is everything you need
It's all you need
No matter how "good" standing strong is, we still long to be free from the duties that requires of us. We grow weary of the daily issues we must face, and we must ocassionally free ourselves in order to be refreshed, relaxed, and re-focused.
So take it all in stride
When all the minds collide
We are asked to take everything in stride, no matter what it is, or what it has done to us, our families, our friends... We are asked not to feel or care. This is what the world has taught us. It's like handling a business call - at Granny's funeral. Yet, there is hope:
You're here to spread your wings
And all it brings
So true. We are here to become who God wants us to be, and if we do so, everything else (including the minds that collided, and the things we're expected to take in stride) falls into place.
I look forward to the comments on this.
