Another Amazing Day + Thanks

June - November of 2009, Drew and I had a great deal of financial difficulty which was made even worse by a random series of events I will not go into at this time. Because of everything that happened, we had to make several choices and decisions concerning our finances that, while not very difficult to make in our case, still weren't exactly what we would have chosen.

One of the biggest changes that was made was getting rid of our rental furniture. Upon our arrival to Norfolk, we made the arrangements for our apartment and agreed to take on an added $175/mo. to the rent for furniture rented through a company the complex has a speacial discount-deal with. This is how we got our bed, sofa, end tables, coffee table, lamps, dining table and chairs... The only piece of furniture we had to our name was an old desk that I've used since highschool.

We were very fortunate to find someone back in November who was selling their mattress and bed frame for cheap. Once we had that, we were able to get rid of all rental furniture. We've been without furniture for two months, and still don't have everything. We didn't even have completely appropriate lighting in our living room until yesterday...we couldn't just go into the living room and hang out at night because there was no light other than from the kitchen or dining room.

So, today, I got on to Freecycle.com. I had looked it over before, but with the truck out of commission, I couldn't use it as the website strictly states that everything must be picked up at the location given rather than costing the owner any expense for the delivery. I wasn't really expecting to find anything. Lo and behold, someone had a six-drawer dresser for free... Also, one of Drew's friends on the ship (who will remain nameless for privacy sake) had offered us a sofa and a matching chair.

Thank yous going out to:
  • The gentlemen across the hall from us who moved out yesterday - I don't know your names or even  know who you are, but thank you for the floor lamps, the gaming chairs (which are amazingly comfortable, in my opinion), the swiffer, the vacuum, and what I'm assuming is an incense holder/burner??
  • The person from Freecycle - Again, don't really know your name, but thank you for the dresser with mirror, and for helping us load it into the truck.
  • The (un-named) friend - Thanks so much for helping another sailor and his family with their fresh start in life.  We sincerely appreciate the sofa and chair and will get as much use out of them as possible.
