Dealin' Reel: Episode 5 - Dear John

Without realizing, I watched a movie without realizing it was originally a book written by Nicholas Sparks.  I didn't figure this out until after the fact, so we'll see how this goes, haha.

I really liked this movie, though I would have preferred the storyline go a bit differently.  I'm one of those weirdos who loves love and can be a bit of a hopeless romantic, so it's difficult to watch a movie where things don't go as I'd like in that department.

In the movie, John is in the army.  While on leave, he meets a young woman named Savannah and spends two weeks getting to know her.  During this time, he also meets a dear friend of Savannah's, who has a special-needs child.

Most of the movie focuses on the time John and Savannah spend separated while he is on a tour of duty.  They write to one another for many months, one of which is September of 2001.  John finds himself needing to make some very tough decisions regarding his life and the choice he is going to make, but Savannah continues to write him despite her own inner torment over the issues she is dealing with while he is away.  Things never truly change between them, but Savannah finds herself facing the seemingly unavoidable in order to help a long-time friend.  In the end, the viewer is left only with a hope that John and Savannah can eventually return to life as they once knew it.

This movie is very inspirational and really brings to light the love needed to help others, even when one must deny themselves.  I found it interesting, with a touch of mystery (I was always wondering, "Okay, so why did xyz just happen?")  which keeps the viewer watching.  I recommend it.

  2. It was a pretty decent movie all in all. Obviously, there is a little disappointment in the storyline for me, but I was satisfied with the movie as a whole.
